Will D’banj shine at World Music Awards?

Nigerians are ecstatic about D’banj‘s four nominations at the upcoming World Music Awards, a first set by any Nigerian ever.

It even gets better as organizers have announced that Mr Oyebanjo will also be performing his infectious single ‘Oliver twist’ live at the awards come December 20, 2012.

D’banj has been nominated in the following categories – ‘World’s Best Artiste‘, ‘Best African Artiste‘, ‘Best Song‘ and ‘Best Video‘.

While being nominated in such important categories is a milestone already, winning looks like a far shot.

Why you’d ask? The 32-year-old is up against some of the biggest artistes in the world right now, making his way to win any category proves impossible on paper.

In the ‘World Best Artiste’ category; D’banj is up against 72 other artistes including the likes of Jay Z, Akon, Chris Brown, Drake, Lil’ Wayne and…wait for it….Justin Bieber.

In the ‘Best Song’ category, D’banj’s ‘Oliver Twist’ single, goes up against Justin Bieber’s ‘Boyfriend‘, Rihanna‘s ‘Diamonds’, Chris Brown’s ‘Don’t Wake me up’, G.O.O.D Music‘s ‘Clique’ and 45 other chart topping songs.

The ‘Best Video’ category also looks like a complete no-no for the Entertainer with Psy‘s viral monster ‘Gangnam Style‘ looking like the favourite. Other nominees of a total of 50 include Beyonce‘s ‘We run the world (Girls)’, Jay Z and Kany West’s ‘N***s in Paris’ and Lady Gaga‘s ‘Judas’.

The fourth category ‘Best African Act’ however looks like a more familiar terrain for the hit maker. Already bagging a MOBO Award this year in the same category, D’banj does stand a solid chance. It is however unclear who his rivals are in the group as the WMAs website does not field this category on their online platform.

One thing is for sure though, D’banj will have the opportunity to perform his music in front of thousands at the event, and millions of fans across the world that’ll see the show on TV.

It looks like a win-win situation for D’banj and Africa.
