Health Workers To Go On Strike

Members of JOHESU, Joint Health Sector Union, have threatened to go on a nationwide strike in case the Federal Government fails to follow the mutual agreement on the welfare of workers in health sector and the conditions of service.

JOHESU made this threat in a letter  titled “Notice of 15 Days Final Ultimatum”sent to the Federal Ministry of Health (FMOH) recently.

According to the release, the official list of demands JOHESU are asking the government include, promotion of health professionals from CONHESS 14 to 15, non-skipping of consolidated health salary skill, CONHESS 10, the National Health Bill and report of Presidential Committee on the harmony in health sector.

The letter also stated that should the Federal Government follow the agreement and reconstitute the boards of health institutions, promote staff members from 14 to 15th level on the salary scale for directors, and review the retirement age from 60 to 65, there would be no strike.

It added that If the government fails to follow the demands, it may lead to a total halt of their services from May 19th this year.

The health workers have announced that they might go on strike for the first time in January this year, and had a 3-day warning strike which led to negotiations with Federal Government. In March this year, they began talking about the strike once again as the Government failed to implement the changes.
